Windows Live

I just installed the windows live beta applications which include Windows Live Writer.  I successfully configured it to edit posts on this blog.  I’m using it to create this post.  Unlike the Wordpress editor, I can do things like use bold type, or italic, or underlined.

  1. I can also create ordered lists and bullets are on the menu but they don’t seem to work.
  2. Here's a link to my google blog.
  3. Here’s a picture:

Move to Campus Domain at Bailey/Howe and Cook libraries

Last week, Paul and I met with Geoff Duke and Greg MacKinnon, about moving the library faculty and staff to the campus domain. I believe the public workstations will also eventually move from "zoodom" to the campus domain.

My first piece of work to implement this move is to take a complete inventory of our domain. I discovered a good tool for documenting user file permissions. It's showacls and the syntax is showacls /s d:\ except this doesn't work when it reaches the bhshares directory. Then it sort of goes into an endless loop so I have to document each share separately.

      DynDNS

I just purchased a paid addition of DynDNS. I'm not certain what the advantages of this are except for support and Host Update Logs.

Here is some information about loopback connections . A loopback connection allows you to browse to your websites URL without having to type in the local ip or localhost. This is nothing new for me except that I have rarely employed this method on windows--but frequently on Unix. It involves mapping the DNS name to a local IP in the hosts file which, in windows, is located at c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\Hosts.

      More on ScribeFire

After configuring ScribeFire for editing this blog on my work computer (Vista Enterprise 64), I am unable to configure it on my home computer (XP SP3), I get the javascript error: "the blogger service responded with an unknown error" after I enter my username, "kor.kiley" and password!

      ScribeFire

I just installed ScribeFire, a firefox tool that give you an interface to edit blogs. Hopefully it will make it easy enough so that I start to publish to my blog more regularly.

I'm very interested in using XAMPP and WordPress to create my own blog. It was mentioned on the dyndns ( https://www.dyndns.com ) website.

Well, I notice that my last entry in May mentions that I had just installed ScribeFire! I have re-installed my OS at work several times since that time as well as re-installing ScribeFire but never using it.

The reason that I re-installed my OS so many times is that I was experimenting with Windows Server 2008, using it as a desktop. The performance was pretty good and it was an interesting experiment, but I finally decided that it was more trouble than it was worth. There were really three reasons why I came to this conclusion; the first is that it is, of course, server software and I was frustrated because I was unable to install one or two programs because they won't run on a server OS. The second reason is that network performance was really poor. The third reason is that I had installed the 64bit version and ran into problems with printer drivers. After that experience I was so fed up that immediately installed Windows XP, thinking that I had had enough of the whole Windows Vista family. About a week ago I realized that I was missing some of Vista's features so I decided to install Vista, once again. But this time my RAM was beefed up from 1.5GB to 4GB. I think that the extra RAM has really made a big difference in performance!

It was not long after installing Vista that I read a few articles about the advantages of a 64 bit OS...and you guessed it! I started all over again and installed 64 bit Vista. I had thought that the only advantage of a 64bit OS is the ability to use more than 4GB of RAM. But according to what I have read, a 64 bit OS makes switching between paged applications much quicker. This was mentioned in the context of running a game along with other applications.

I'm not ready to say that I've noticed the 64 bit edition having better performance in any situation that I've noticed. I did finally get the front office printers working on my computer though. It seems that you can't install 64 bit print drivers on a 32 bit OS, so I was unable to install those on Tyro and install the queue on my workstation. I finally just installed the Canon and Lexmark drivers on my desktop, though, and that works fine. I also installed the driver on tyro2 which has server 2008 64 bit installed. Although I was able to install that queue on my workstation, it doesn't seem to work!
